Shannon Zirkle is a wedding photographer based out of Chennai who is well known for her breathtaking, photo-journalistic style of capturing weddings. Her photos are beautiful, and stories unto themselves. Here’s a little peep into her style of photography, and the way she works.
How did you get started?
I started taking photos when I was really little. My Mom used to take pictures of everything. She would take photos of us going bowling, to sleepovers, and even in the bath tub. When I was old enough to hold the camera, she told me,”It’s your turn to document everything.” Everywhere we went, I took photos.
In my senior year of high school, I had the opportunity to mentor with a photographer from the Baltimore Sun, a major metropolitan newspaper on the US East Coast. I had the best internship ever. I got to go on the sidelines of major league football games, I was at a crime scene and I even had my first photograph published on the front page of the Baltimore Sun. This inspired me to study photojournalism at Western Kentucky University. From there I interned at several newspapers and then worked as a staff photojournalist with the newspaper, The Capital. Before I knew it, I was marrying a Tamilian and moved to India with my husband and three cats.
What’s your favourite part of the wedding to shoot?
One of my favorite part of weddings is the First Look. It’s when the bride and groom see each other for the first time. Traditionally, the bride and groom don’t see each other until they walk down the aisle in the Christian wedding. I always encourage the couples I’m working with to see each other before the ceremony starts. When the groom sees the bride dressed up for the first time, he that look of joy on his face.
Another moment I love capturing is the first kiss in Christian weddings. It’s a beautiful moment to capture as it showcases the shared happiness of the bride and groom as they have just been declared man and wife. Such moments are great to capture as they show the joy and excitement between the bride and groom which makes them picture-perfect.
What do you love about wedding shoots?
I think what I love most about documenting weddings is looking for those rare, beautiful moments and capturing them on the film.
Your favourite wedding shoot so far?
I’m not sure as yet. There are a lot of weddings that have a a lot of fun and uniqueness to them, so I can’t really at this point think of a wedding that stands out in my mind.
