When you’re just getting started with makeup, putting together a makeup kit in a budget might seem like a nearly impossible task. What should you buy? What should you not buy? It doesn’t help that when you ask the sales assistants in the shop counters for help, they try to unload the entire product catalog on you. So after much research (and a lot of spending!), here’s how you can create a perfect beginner’s makeup kit on a budget of under Rs. 5,000/-!
Foundation, Concealer and Powder
Foundation and concealer are the building blocks of your base, as well as your makeup kit. There are plenty of inexpensive options out there, but for me, none of them have impressed – until the Maybelline Fit Me range rolled around. The coverage and the finish of these products are on par with any ‘premium’ brand that’s out there, and the shade range is impressive too! The Maybelline Fit Me Foundation, the Maybelline Fit Me Concealer and the Maybelline Fit Me Powder Compact are all great, affordable products, and give medium to full coverage that you can build up.

Eyeliner and Mascara
It isn’t without reason that they say that the eyes are the windows to the soul – which is why eyeliner and mascara are a makeup must have! When you’re a beginner, you should look for products that multitask, which is why a twist-up kajal like The L’Oreal Kajal Magique is a great addition to your makeup kit. It’s ridiculously easy to use, works both on your waterline as a kajal, and can be used to line your eyes as well. It doesn’t smudge or budge so rest assured it’ll last through the day!
As for mascara, I’ve once read a celebrity makeup artist calling it a “push up bra for the eyes” and I couldn’t agree more! It instantly makes your eyes look bigger and more wide awake. On most days, I skip the eyeliner and go straight to mascara for a look that’s both put together and natural. I love the Maybelline Hypercurl Volume Mascara. It volumizes, lengthens, and is waterproof. TIP: Remember that you have to dump your mascara after 6 months – so while luxurious, expensive mascaras are nice, it doesn’t make sense to look beyond the inexpensive ones which do the job just as well.

Because, duh. When you’re a newbie, it’s best to stick to a My-Lips-But-Better shade that you can wear for a lot of occasions – it’ll help you become comfortable with the idea of wearing lipstick regularly, and trust me, it won’t be long before it becomes a bonafide addiction! I like the shade Mauve Spot in the Lakme 9 to 5 lipstick series. It’s a rose-brown shade that is just so pretty on Indian skin tones!

Blush – Highlight – Contour
Ah, the holy trinity of cheek products! While blush has always been a staple, given the amount of exposure we have to makeup today, thanks to YouTube, it’s impossible to not know about highlighting and contouring. The difference it makes to changing your face structure is remarkable (fat face speaking!). Instead of buying three separate products, it’s best to go for a palette, like the Makeup Revolution Iconic Blush Bronzer & Highlight. It’s got three products – and they’re all great quality – for the price of one! It’s also really travel friendly.

The most important part of your kit! Brushes give your makeup a kind of professional finish that fingers never will. But when you’re a beginner, it can be overwhelming, and expensive to venture into brush-land. I fully recommend, and personally LOVE the Real Techniques Core Collection set. Four basic brushes which can multitask really well – the big powder brush is great for liquid foundation and your powder compact. The contour brush is amazing for blush, highlight and contour, the lip brush works as a concealer brush AND an eye brush, and (phew), foundation brush is magic for working the foundation into the nooks and crannies of your face. The best part – it’s less than 880 bucks for a set of four, which is crazy affordable, given the quality. Don’t even think twice about getting this set. It comes with a handy kit that you can travel with, and also doubles up as a stand when you’ve to clean and dry your brushes.

…And we’re almost done! Eyeshadow is a nice addition to your makeup kit because it adds dimension to your look, and it’s just a lot of fun to play around with. The Makeup Revolution Iconic Pro I Palette is pretty much the exact dupe of the famous Urban Decay Naked Palette aka – you’re never going to need any eyeshadow shades other than the ones here Palette. Work, wedding or party – there’s shades here which will suit every occasion. The pigmentation is fantastic, and the value for money aspect is really off the roof.

Take It All Off!
What’s more important than the makeup in your kit? A makeup remover! There are plenty of commercial makeup removers in the market, but nothing, NOTHING, works as well as good ol’ coconut oil. Not only is it gentle and effective, but it even helps your skin in the long run! Buy organic coconut oil to be sure of the product, because some brands might contain additives that could potentially harm your skin. I recommend the Pure for Sure Organic Coconut Oil. Massage the oil onto your skin to break the makeup down, and use a face wash to wash it all off. Alternatively, you can remove makeup with coconut oil and a cotton ball.
~Your final cart: Rs. 4,762 + Rs. 125 = Rs. 4,887/-
And there you have it! A full makeup kit for less than Rs. 5,000/-! Do you have any product recommendations that you would like to share? Do let me know in the comments below 🙂
